Brisbane, 7th December 2023 – Volgren, Australia’s leading bus bodybuilder, has secured a groundbreaking project to design, build, and deliver 165 new buses for Queensland, bolstering the state’s public transportation infrastructure. This initiative comes on the heels of Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk’s $134 million investment announcement aimed at fortifying the local bus manufacturing sector with the addition of 200 new buses.

These new buses, slated for delivery in 2024, will serve as a Rail Replacement fleet, directly contributing to job creation and economic growth in Queensland. The Department of Transport and Main Roads will oversee the acquisition and operation of these vehicles, solidifying the commitment to supporting local industries.

Volgren’s CEO, Thiago Deiro, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “This project is a game-changer for Volgren’s QLD production facility. It will support hundreds of current and new jobs in Brisbane and create and retain essential skills for the zero emission bus transition from 2025. Volgren is pleased to have been trusted with such an amazing project.”

Reflecting on the broader implications of the initiative, Deiro noted, “After facing challenging years, during and post-COVID, long-term projects with visibility will allow the industry to invest in local jobs, training, and providing opportunities for the communities.”

Volgren’s commitment to local production and circular economy practices was underscored, with Deiro highlighting, “Besides being locally manufactured in Brisbane, Volgren buses are predominantly made using locally supplied parts and components, creating a circular economy, benefiting the local supply chain, and creating amazing job opportunities for the communities where we are involved.”

The company expressed gratitude to the Palaszczuk Government, including Transport Minister Mark Bailey and the Department of Transport and Main Roads, for their unwavering support. “This is critical and vital for local business to remain viable and investing in the state,” said Deiro.

Commencing works promptly, Volgren in partnership with Volvo, aims to begin deliveries of these new buses from early 2024. The company is actively seeking new professionals to join their team, reflecting the positive economic impact of the project on the job market.

In closing, this initiative represents a significant stride towards Queensland’s sustainable transportation future, fostering economic growth, job creation, and skills development within the region. Volgren looks forward to the successful delivery of this project and the continued collaboration with the Queensland government to enhance the state’s public transportation network.
